Er, I just thought it would be polite to update my blog on this eve; also because self promotion is not always a bad thing.
New year, new beginnings and new bloopety blah. I don’t know if that works for you but I, for one, think it’s just an excuse people want to start afresh. Insecure, dissatisfied beings that we are, we want something to conspire an ass-kick for us so that we may rise up to something constructive before settling into the sand-bag existence.
What’s that? Spoken like a true cynic? Why, thank you! Chocolate?
2010 has been another ‘meh’ year. Exciting in some ways, dreary in others, but comparatively a better one when one thinks about the holed up IIT aspirant days. Nerdiest one too, thanks to the ample time I get to chomp on all the things I like to do, that too in the name of education- from books to graphic novels and manga to movies and music. Softwares and photography came in as side orders to be relished with equal vigour. But this post is not about that but a blog-retrospect and some ‘resolutions’.
Hey, I, too, am your cockadoodie ass-kick-needing labradoodle.
So, looking back at my two years (is it?) worth of writing, review time-
1. The End: A part fiction post on a suicidal IIT aspirant. Decent start.
2. … : (I would never acknowledge that. Sucked badonkadonks)
3. The Break-Up: Clarification- It's fictional. An attempt at exploring the emotional description prowess. Turned out partly emo.
4. The Protagonyst: Inspiration phase- R K Narayan. Extremely noble concept with a cancer patient as the protagonist and an unexpectedly nice execution. An achievement by the then standards.
5. Cow-Boy: Average storyline, an attempt at capturing innocence of a 12 year old. Something Roald Dahl fans would dig.
6. Caller Tune: And yours truly comes of age. A 10 minute movie script originally meant to be adapted in an animation movie format, later made twice as a short movie. Then on, the fascination with dark themes stuck.
7. Depressing Life: A short nonsensical fun rap made while dawdling through exams.
8. Luhv: A lameass 55 fiction capitalizing on the Section 377.
9. The Watchmaker: An epic. Without mincing words, one of my finest works (though today, I can edit a lot more and make it smoother). Great concept and an execution to justify it.
10. The Girl Behind the Counter: A fine accomplishment from a genre I think is the hardest to dabble into- romance. Fictionalized events inspired from a real person.
11. A Dedication: A shortie. Smooth and sweet.
12. The Recipe: Another dark shortie. Neat, to say the least.
13. 13 Knots: Came after a long hiatus. Inspiration phase- Arvind Adiga. Nice concept but a bumpy execution. The hangman’s tale is great in parts but loses out in some.
14. Riya I & II: One on which my biggest hopes rode. The psychological multi-layered tale was lost for two months with my PC conking off- all of the 40 pages. Though I managed to recover it, it had by then lost the zing. Maybe someday…
15. Fuck: Another fun-rap conceived in a sleepless night.
16. Colour Code: Another one of the successful attempts at deviancy. A stalker’s account.
17. Shadows: The latest. The screenplay unexpectedly brought in unanimous praise from all the quarters. Dealing with societal residue, it waits to be adapted.
Though above mentioned perceptions are my own, I maintain one is his own harshest critic. Sniff no vanity here.
So, 2011. What now? Well, there’s a tentatively titled ‘1 Dollar’, an Adiga-esqe story. But that aside, one of the challenges I set myself is another attempt at romance. You see, tasteful romance is a rarity in spite of that being one of the largest written and consumed genres. I’ve read too many stories and only a handful has managed to appeal- off the top of my mind, there’s one on the blogosphere and another’s Erich Segal. That’s one.
Next, abstract writings, one that I’ve been fascinated with since ages. If you see my blog list, a certain Lohna Matthu lies- one such abstract writer. He once posted excerpts from a novel he had abandoned, and I crap you not, that is one of the top 3 most brilliant prose I have ever managed to come across.
Lastly, I'll let loose the beast in me and go on a murder rampage. If nothing else, it is satisfying.
That’s all for ‘Reader Connect’ for now. Coming up next: Another go at fiction. Or (spoiler alert), a notification of a non-fiction blog, an idea I’ve been toying with recently.
Hang around till then :D
